Dan Gleeson talks about his parents and growing up in Tipperary, rural Kerry and Dublin. He discusses music and dance in his mother's family (O'Keefe) home in Kerry and his education in Dublin where he attended Belvedere College and the College of Technology (Bolton Street) studying architecture. Dan then tells of meeting his wife Beverly Jo Isbrandtsen in London and immigrating to live in her home state of Nebraska. Dan discusses his career in architecture and urban planning including his work on the iconic IDS Center, Minneapolis skyways, St. Paul's Lowertown and other projects in the Twin Cities where he, Beverly and their children moved in 1969. He tells the story of their brief stint in Limerick, Ireland. Dan then covers his discovery of the Irish cultural community of the Twin Cities through O'Connell's Pub, MacCafferty's, Na Fianna Irish Theatre, the Halftime Rec, the Irish Well, the Dubliner and other organizations and gathering places. Dan also discusses his and Beverly's involvement in local civic projects in northwest Minneapolis and Grand Avenue where he was instrumental in the first Grand Old Day. Throughout the interview, Dan speaks about his many Minnesota friends including Mike Wallace, Maeve O'Mara, Liam O'Neill, David O'Sullivan, Denis Clarke, Tom Scanlon, Andy Vaughan, Raymond McCafferty and David Brooks. |
